tn-650_MON_PE_Red_1953-1Charles Darrow was an unemployed salesman and inventor living in Germantown, Pennsylvania, who was struggling with odd jobs to support his family in the years following the great stock market crash of 1929. Charles Darrow remembering his summers spent in Atlantic City, New Jersey, spent his spare time drawing the streets of Atlantic City on his kitchen tablecloth, with found pieces of material and bits of paints, wood etc. contributed by local merchants. A game was already forming in his mind as he built little hotels, houses and other tokens to go along with his painted streets.

Soon friends and family gathered nightly to sit round the kitchen table to buy, rent and sell real estate, all part of a game involving spending vast sums of play money. It quickly became a favorite activity among those with little real cash of their own. The friends soon wanted copies of the game to play at home (especially the winners.) The accommodating inventor began selling copies of his board game for four dollars each. He then made up a few sets and offered them to department stores in Philadelphia. Orders for the game increased to the point where Charles Darrow decided to try to sell the game to a game manufacturer rather than going into full-scale manufacturing. He wrote to Parker Brothers to see if the company would be interested in producing and marketing the game on a national basis. The company turned down Charles Darrow, explaining that his game contained “fifty-two fundamental errors” including: the game took too long to play, the rules were too complicated and there was no clear goal for the winner.

One his customers was a friend of Sally Barton, daughter of Parker Brothers’ founder, George Parker, bought a copy of the game. The friend told Mrs. Barton how much fun Monopoly was, the friend also suggested that Mrs. Barton tell her husband, Robert B. M. Barton, then president of Parker Brothers. Mr. Barton listened to his wife and bought a copy of the game. Soon he arranged to talk business with Darrow in Parker Brothers’ New York sales office, offering to buy the game and give Charles Darrow royalties on all sets sold. Darrow accepted and permitted Parker Brothers to develop a shorter variation of the game, added as an option to the rules.

As a kid I enjoyed this game and played it many times with family and friends.  The picture above is the same game my Dad played as a kid.  I still have his original game today and that was when the houses were made of wood, the piece were pewter and the cards were a heavy cardboard.   But no matter when you started playing Monoploy, it has always been one of the best selling board games.  This game teaches you about planning, saving, and spending money as well as, the strategy of finance. Lessons that are still important 83 years later.

hardware1As computer and mobile hardware approach commoditization, hardware vendors must find ways to remain profitable in the face of declining margins and sales. To increase margins, many of them are in the process of or have already acquired software companies. IBM for example, has purchased MaaS360 to enhance their security software portfolio. Zebra Technology purchased RhoMobile, a multi-OS application development for both consumer and enterprise-class mobile devices. Honeywell has now purchased Movilizer, the first cloud platform for field service applications.

Many companies heed the advice of former HP executive Marten Mickos who said, “become a solution provider where hardware is an important part, but still just a part.” Whether the goal is diversification, expanding into different market areas with different products or differentiation, or enhancing hardware offerings with complimentary software to add value—all vendors are exploring new business models to stay ahead.
Today, we will be discussing the features of Movilizer and how Honeywell believes this will help enhance their business model and grow hardware business at the same time.
Honeywell, seeking to improve the value of its handheld device business, acquired the field service cloud platform provider, Movilizer, in 2015. Its field mobility applications enable devices, like Honeywell’s, to complete business processes by connecting workers to back-end systems via cloud technology. The acquisition serves as a new channel of revenue for the hardware manufacturer, but more importantly, will provide future cross-selling opportunities and differentiation to an otherwise rather homogeneous hardware portfolio.

Movilizer’s cloud software enables a distributed workforce to create, deploy and manage workflow solutions – whether at the point of sale, in the field, in a warehouse or distribution center. Customers can seamlessly collect, transmit and analyze data generated by their workers on their existing information technology (IT) systems, enabling them to harness the power of their workforce from anywhere to best serve the needs of their end customers.
Movilizer’s multi-tenant, cloud and mobile applications are currently used by more than 200 multi-national companies in 30 countries, executing more than 1.5 million mobile business application transactions daily in the utility, manufacturing, engineering, transportation, logistics and consumer packaged goods industries. The platform allows customers running SAP, for example, to more quickly build native mobile applications from scratch inside SAP or to rapidly deploy out-of-the-box mobile applications for service, maintenance, sales, and distribution, warehouse or track-and-trace environments in just days.
It is too early to tell whether the acquisition will be successful or not. Movilizer does have future-proof potential given its cloud architecture and capabilities to build even more applications to support evolving business processes. Penetration into workflows through acquisitions represents one potential strategy that is not without risks—potential alienation of existing software partners— but as hardware markets evolve, such actions may become more commonplace.

omni-idRFID Directionality (i.e. the direction a tag is traveling past the RFID read) has been a sought after capability since RFID was introduced to the commercial market in the 1970’s. While the evolution of RFID technology has made great strides over the years, these technological advancements have for the most part been limited to the packaging, operating environment, standards adoption, and cost elements. The basic function of using RFID technology to identify the existence of an item(s) at a particular location, at a particular point in time has not changed much.

Because of the universal need for passive RFID tag directionality, coupled with the lack of inherent technical capability within the RFID ecosystem, the industry has tried a few “workarounds” to provide this capability. These “workarounds” have included the setup of multiple antennas (essentially along the tag path) and determining which antenna was the first to read the tag which helped determine direction. This “workaround” is expensive and also requires the physical space necessary to set up multiple antennas that will not contain field overlap. Another tactic that some vendors have pursued is to measure the phase of the RFID tag signal which can be returned if a vendor’s reader provides Low Level Reader Protocol (LLRP) data. This method involves measuring the signal phase of a tag at several points in time as it moves through the antenna’s field of view. This “workaround” also has its pitfalls since there are so many variables that are difficult to control in the real world in order to get an accurate determination of direction. (i.e. – the tag direction calculation is based upon a formula that assumes the tag is moving through the antenna’s field of view at a constant velocity, and at a constant height relative to the antenna location, etc.) It’s safe to say that while some of these techniques may be of some use within certain environments, they are certainly not the answer for everyone; especially anyone who requires 99%+ accuracy with their inventory and/or assets.

Within the last year or so, a company called Impinj, has introduced the technology that will finally make this a reality. They call it their xArray Gateway.

This gateway is a ceiling mounted robust RFID reader, is “Always-on” and uses a combination of proprietary antennas within the gateway to track multiple tags in 2 dimensions in pseudo real-time. It can track the identity and location of an item reading up to 1000 tags per second in a 1500 sq. ft. area. It is getting good reviews within the retail industry.

Versona Systems believes that this technology will someday evolve into a production-solid product offering for the manufacturing and distribution industries. However, at this point we would consider this technology (version 1.0) to be a bit immature to be realistically considered for most manufacturing and distribution companies. We think the first adopters of this technology will be retail and healthcare. Impinj believes their “Always-on” gateway is well suited for manufacturing. But we are not aware of any wide-spread use in that environment to date.

Here are a few of its current shortcomings (as we see them):
1. The ideal ceiling height for this product (according to Impinj’s specifications) is between 10-15 feet. Most of the ceiling heights where we work are anywhere from 25-40 feet up. We are not sure what effect that would have on the reader’s ability to track items beneath it.
2. We have not been able to do any testing with this new reader/gateway. This gateway may not detect a tag on a pallet that is buried beneath 30-40 other tags (especially from 40 feet up) much more testing is needed.
3. Again, because of the lack of testing with this new technology, we don’t know if this reader/gateway could read all tags on a pallet 100% of the time. (i.e. – if the forklift is putting a pallet of plastic containers on the trailer and that pallet contains 48 parts, we would want to be absolutely sure that the tracking system has accounted for all 48 parts)

In today’s fast paced market, many businesses are unable to make sound decisions based on inventory data because the updates are not frequent enough for split second decisions with the demand of internet transactions. Understanding RFID tag directionality is important to making decisions on inventory flow and location for an item in real time. As the demand for inventory visibility grows with the internet, the new era of RFID of “Always-on” item intelligence is a must. Versona experts believe this will be a game changer in the RFID space and our team is watching this closely.
